Neil worked at his mother's grocery store on Pelum & Mertly in St. Paul. Neil then traveled as a salesman for Beechnut before he married.

Cornelius/Neil Peter Mullaly married Dorothy Margaret Peloquin in 1933. [pic 15]  According to Dorothy, they met at the grocery store.  They lived in Minneapolis for a few years after they were married and then bought a farm in Vermillian/New Market, Dakota Co., MN and went to church at St. Columbus Catholic Church in Vermillian.

Dorothy was born in St. Paul, Washington Co., MN on 7 May, 1910. She was one of seven children.  Her mother was Mary (Gagne) Peloquin. Her maternal grandparents were Aresens Gagne, who was born in Montreal, Canada, and Axila (Basset) Gagne.  Her father was Oliver Peloquin who was born 1885-86 in Stillwater, MN and died in 1964 in Hugo, MN. Her paternal grandparents were Mitchell Peloquin, with red hair and whiskers, born before 1866 in Sorel, Qubec, Canada, and Adele (Aurel) Peloquin, born before 1866 in St. Remi, Quebec, Canada, died in 1932.  Dorothy's parents's wedding was witnessed by Oliver's brother, Cyril Peloquin of Duluth, MN, and Miss Helen Gagne (sister to Mary?) of St. Paul. Oliver Peloquin died 16 June 1964. Mary (Gagne) Peloquin lived to meet her great-grand children.

High School graduation picture of Miss Dorothy Margaret Peloquin. [pic 16]  Some of her high school friends called her "Dot" and maybe also "Dotty."

Durring the Great Depression, Neil & Dorothy lived on the farm in Vermillian.  They sold cream, chickens & eggs. They had two horses that Neil called "western" since they were not pack horses.  One of their horses would always run away. Durring the depression postcards were 1 cent while letter were 3 cents. The family was so broke that they couldn't afford to buy a stamp.  Neil continued to travel as a salesman for Beechnut.

Durring WW2 the Lakeville Ammunitions Plant paid each land owner one dollar to put a fence around the stream that crossed their land.  This was accepted by Neil for the war effort though this divided the Mullaly land in two and seperated the farm from the cow pasture. Neil & Dorothy then needed to drive the cows across a neighbor's to get to pasture.

Neil, Dorothy and their two children moved to St. Paul in approximately 1942.. They bought a house a few blocks away from the Pelum store.  Neil's mother Christine was having health trouble, so they began to run the store for her.  Dorothy would work the counter, their two children, one boy & one girl, would work the ice cream counter and stocking while Neil worked as boucher.

Neil, Dorothy and their children traveled to California to visit Aunt Kate (Mullaly) Perez, her husband Jose, and their two children.

In 1953, the family bought a farm in Forest Lake, Washington Co., MN.  The upper bedrooms would get so cold in the winter that at times their son would sleep on a cot in the living room.

Cornelius/Neil Peter Mullaly died 11 Sept. 1973 at age 70 in Forest Lake, Washington Co., MN.  He was buried at Calvary Cemetery in Forest Lake, Washington Co., MN. Dorothy built a house on 6th Street in 1975 and sold the Forest Lake farm.

Dorothy (Peloquin) Mullaly posed for personal pictures in 1989. Dorothy volunteered at and St. Peter's Church and at the Senior's Center for many years.

Dorothy Margaret (Peloquin) Mullaly lived as a widow for more than twenty three years before she had a stroke at the end of February of 1997. She remained in a coma until her death on Palm Sunday, 23 March 1997. She was survived by both of her children, ten grandchildren, and three great-grandchildren, of which I am one.
