Michael Mullally/Mullaly

Michael Mullally/Mullaly
Second Generation - Ireland born Immigrant

Michael Mullally was born in Ireland between Aug. 1823 and Aug. 1824, the son of John & Margaret Mullally.   Michael married his first wife Anna before Oct. 1848. Michael & Anna "Mullally" arrived at the Port of New York from Liverpool on the ship HOME in Oct. 1848. They were both listed as age 24 and laborers. They were traveling with their infant, Patrick. The passenger information was found in the book "The Famine Immigrants to the Port of New York" in volume 3, page 246.

Michael "Malaly" was listed as the head of the household on the 1850 Federal Census for Benson, Rutland Co. Vermont, page 154 entry 197-211. He was age 26, born in Ireland, laborer. Also listed was his wife "Ann", age 26, born in Ireland; son Patrick, age 2, born in Ireland;  and son John, infant 6/12 yr., born in NY.

1850 Michael's wife Anna died. Also, his infant son John.  The family was living in Benson, Rutland Co. Vermont at the time. The deaths are identified in the register of death.  The cemetery is just behind the Benson Town Hall and no grave marker was found by Kathleen on her 1997 visit. Michael was now a single parent with infant Patrick, age 2.

Working in the iron mine was an attractive occupation for an Irish immigrant with a family to support. Michael's occupation was listed as a laborer, he could have been a miner.  The Hammondville Iron Mine, just outside of Ticonderoga, NY, was operational until 1850. Michael could have worked there in 1849 when his son John was born and then followed the other miners to Vermont in early 1850 to work in the mines there.

The American Civil War was from 1861-1865. Little is known about Michael's family from 1851 to 1870.  Michael may have served in the Civil War, but any man could pay a new immigrant from the Port of New York to take his place fighting, and it was considered patriotic.

Michael's first wife, Anna, must have died before 1870.  Michael remarried to Catherine. He either purchased a farm or received it as Catherine's dowry before 1870.

Michael "Malaley" was then listed as the head of a household on the 1870 Federal Census for Ticonderoga, Essex County, New York; age 45, born in Ireland, farmer, value of personal property was $825.00. Also listed was his second wife, Catherine, age 44, born in Ireland, keeping house; son Patrick, age 23, born in Ireland, laborer; AND son James, age 16, born in NY, student. [doc 2]

A picture of Michael still exists from his visit to his grandson Michael J. Mullaly's home in Minneapolis, MN, around 1904. The picture has his great-grandson, Cornelius/Neil Peter Mullaly, on his knee. Baby Neil appears to be 1 yr. old so Michael must be around 80 yrs. [see picture 1]

Michael Mullaly died 20 Aug. 1906 at age 82 in Ticonderoga, Essex Co., NY.   The Funeral was at St. Mary's. Catholic Church in Ticonderoga. He was buried at the Streetroad Cemetery. [doc 1] Michael's burial site is not maked.  Pictures of the cemetery were taken in the fall in 1997 by Kathleen.

Michael's death record says he was "married" and not "widowed", was Catherine still alive in 1906 at his death?

Michael and Anna had the two following children:

  1. Patrick D. Mullaly: born 1847-1848, in Ireland.
  2. John Mullaly: born 1849-50, in NY.

Michael and Anna/Catherine had the following child:

  1. James Mullaly: born 1853-1854, in NY.
