Patrick D. Mullaly Third Generation - Ireland born Infant Immigrant
Patrick D. Mullaly, born Oct. 1847 - Oct.1848, in Ireland. Patrick first appears in the records as an infant passenger traveling to America form Liverpoor with his parents, Michael & Anna "Mullally." Because Patrick was listed as an "infant" on the ship HOME, he may have been born in Ireland, Liverpool, or on the ship to America. The passenger information was found in the book "The Famine Immigrants to the Port of New York" in volume 3 page 246.
Patrick D. was listed as age 2, born in Ireland on the 1850 Federal Census for Benson, Rutland Co. Vermont, page 154 entry 197-211. His father Michael was listed as head of the household.
Patrick D. was 18 years old at the end of the Civil War in 1865. Nothing is known of his activities during this time, but he did survive those terrible years.
Patrick D. was listed with his father, Michael "Mulaley" as head of household on the 1870 Federal Census for Ticonderoga, Essex Co., NY at age 23, born in Ireland, laborer. [doc 4]
Patrick D. Mullaly married
Mary Jane McCauley between 1870 and 1875. Mary J. was born 27 July 1843, in Ireland. She must have immigrated to America from 1843-1875. Her parents were Katherine (Murphy) McCauley & Cornelius McCauley whom were both born before 1925 in Ireland. [doc 6]
According to the 1870 Federal Census for Ticonderoga, Essex Co., NY there is a McCauley family listed as neighbors to the "Malaley's"
They could have very well been related to Patrick D.'s wife, Mary J.
Patrick "Mulally" was listed as the head of household in the 1880 Federal Census for Ticonderoga, Essex Co., NY, age 35,
laborer; wife Mary J., age 37, keeping house; son Michael, age 5; and son "Corneleus," age 3. [doc 6]
On 15 Feb. 1886 the Clerk of
Courts in Shoreham, Addison Co., VT have an birth entry in their register for "Mary Mullnally." It states that "Patrick D. & Mary Mullnally" were the parents. Patrick D. and his family may
have moved from New York to Vermont between Dec. 1880 and June 1884, since Anna was born in NY and Katherine was born in VT, though the nearest hospital may have just been over the border in Shoreham, Vermont.
All records of Mary Jane McCauley show her name as "Mary J." In 1911 Mary J.'s last name was "McAuley" when her daughter, Mary G., who was a school teacher, filled out her marriage license. [doc 8] On Mary J.'s death record, informant was daughter Anna, her last name was "McCauley." If Mary J. and her parents were born in Ireland then they would use the Irish
spelling which is "McCauley." [doc 3] But, if they were originally from Scotland and moved to Ireland, then "McAuley" is the appropriate spelling.
No more is confirmed about the McCauley spelling at this time.
Patrick must have died between 1886, the birth of their youngest child, and 1900, since he doesn't appear on the 1900. Cornelius P. was listed as the head of the household in the 1900 Federal Soundex (Census) for NY. As listed: Cornelius "Malaley",
age 23, born Sept. 1876 in NY; mother Mary J., born June 1844 in Ireland; sister Anna, age 19, born Dec. 1880 in NY; sister Katherine, age 15, born
June 1884 in VT; sister Mary, age 14, born Feb. 1886 in VT. [doc 9] Mary J. lived in Rutherford, Essex Co., NJ, with her daughter Anna at the time of her son Cornelius's death in 1913. Daughter Mary G. and her husband Thomas J. Brady lived in Rutherford also. [doc 17] It was said by Dorothy Mullaly that one of the girls, Anna or Mary G., lived in E. Rutherford, NJ and made "Fancy hats for rich people."
Both girls and mother could have owned and managed the hat shop since they all lived in Rutherford 1913.
A picture still existed of Mary J. on 23 Sept. 1915.
This picture was found with pictures from around 1915 in a photo album that her daughter-in-law Christine Louise (Caspers) Mullaly passed on to her daughter-in-law Dorothy Margaret (Peloquin) Mullaly.
It states that it was taken on Sept. 23, which would have been about three months after Mary J.'s eldest child, Michael J. had died in June of 1915.
Mary Jane (McCauley) Mullaly, died on 2 March 1927, age 83, while living with her spinster daughter Miss Anna Mullaly in Lynhurst, (Near Rutherford), Essex Co., NJ. Her body was sent to Ticonderoga, NY for burial. [doc 6] The St. Mary's Catholic Church has a record in their register, loosely translated from Latin as: 2 March (1927) in Rutherford, NJ "Maria Johanna Mullaly" in
her 86th year, died. Her age is wrong, but the date of her death is accurate. [doc 10]
Patrick and Mary Jane had the following children:
- Michael J. Mullaly, born 20 May 1975, in NY.
- Cornelius P. Mullaly, born Sept. 1976, in NY.
- Anna D. Mullaly born Dec. 1880, in NY.
- Katherine Mullaly born June 1884, in Vermont.
